The impact of ‘digital painting’ on regular painting is a complicated story. The dispute between abstraction and representational painting was looking tired by the eighties, though until the nineties ‘computer art’ was predominantly abstract and about systems. My painting has always been about lyrical qualities. It has moved between electronic and ‘physical’ forms without too much pain. Increasingly these distinctions matter less and less, while what does matter is making a picture come alive in its own terms.
