I work on the philosophy of technology and the sociology and cultural analysis of digital media, especially video games. My books on these subjects include 'Critical Technology: a social theory of personal computing' (Ashgate 2004) and 'Technology & Social Power' (Palgrave 2008). My talk will be based on my newest book, 'Aesthetic Theory and the Video Game' (MUP 2011), which is a philosophical examination of the video game as a cultural object. It draws on ideas from classical and contemporary aesthetic theory, and events in the history of painting, dance and newer media, to show that video games are best defined in terms of an excess of form over content; of pattern over meaning, and of allegory over literal signification.
