Dr. Sheena Calvert
University of Westminster
Dr. Sheena Calvert is a designer/writer/educator, in the fields of design and typography; art and critical theory, gained in both in the UK and The US. She is currently senior lecturer in critical theory at the University of Westminster, and Associate Lecturer at Central St. Martins and the London College of Communication.
In undergraduate and post-graduate work at the Central school of Art, Yale University, and the Jan Van Eyck Akademie she investigated the relationship between the im/materiality of language and typography, and various philosophies of language, across diverse media. Her research explores the interconnections between art, language, and paradox, arguing for a ‘sensual logic’ with which to better understand art, language, and the world. This involves co-interrogating language through the disciplines of art and philosophy, in the form of visual/material/aural expressions, which attempt to inhabit, rather than explain those ideas.
She has a particular interest in letterpress printing as an experimental medium in which theory and practice intersect, and runs her own letterpress studio, the .918 press, in Hackney, London.
Participation at ISEA is made possible with the support of a University of Westminster Staff Development Grant.
