Locations and Accommodation: FAQs

Where is ISEA2011 Istanbul taking place?

The exhibitions are taking place mainly in Taksim.
The conference is going to be held in Sabanci Center in Levent:

The last day of the conference will be held on Sabanci University main campus. There are shuttle bus services operating between the city center and the campus.

Where should I stay and what are the transportation options?

This very much depends on how you would like to spend your time in Istanbul. You can stay in Levent, Taksim (including Pera and Cihangir districts), Beşiktaş, or Sultanahmet.

Levent is the business district. If you do not want to commute everyday to the conference venue, you can stay in Levent. Hotels in Levent are listed below at point 6 under the heading Accommodation Options.

There are two major shopping malls around the area:
Istanbul Sapphire

If you do not want to stay in Levent, in order to reach the conference venue, the best way is to take the subway from Taksim. It takes approximately 15 – 20 minutes to get to Levent from Taksim.

Taksim is the liveliest area in Istanbul. It is very central and there are a lot of major art galleries around. There are also many restaurants, bars, music clubs, concert halls, etc. around. Istiklal Caddesi is the major place for night life and it is within walking distance from Pera and Cihangir districts. We recommend you book hotels in Taksim because it is very central and it is very easy to reach Levent by subway from Taksim.

The subway station entrance is on Taksim Square.

Sometimes in hotel addresses, the name “Beyoglu” may appear instead of Taksim because Taksim is part of the larger Beyoglu area. Please check on Google Maps to see if the hotel location is close to Istiklal Caddesi and give preference to those that are closer to Istiklal Caddesi to be able to reach the subway station easily.

Beşiktaş has hotels with views of Bosphorus. It takes approximately 10 - 15 minutes by bus to get to Taksim Square from Besiktaş (depending on the traffic). You may choose to stay in Beşiktaş if you would like to stroll along the Bosphorus shore.

Sultanahmet is the historical peninsula. If you fancy a touristic visit, then, you can book your hotel in Sultanahmet. There are several options to get to Taksim from Sultanahmet:

Option 1: Take the tram to Kabataş (approx. 20 mins.) and funicular (approx. 4 mins.) to Taksim Square, the beginning of Istiklal Caddesi.
Option 2: Take the tram to Karaköy (approx 17 mins.) and another tram (namely “Tünel”, approx. 5 mins.) to Taksim Tünel area, the end of the Istiklal Caddesi. It is 2.5 km from Tünel to Taksim Square, where the subway station is. You can take the nostalgic tram from Tunel or walk along Istiklal Caddesi to reach the subway station on the square.
Option 3: You can take a taxi from Sultanahmet to Taksim square for approx. 10 - 12 EUR.

A one way ticket for subway and buses is a little less than 1 EUR (this may change slightly if you use other means of transportation).
