About solar artworks
Solar artworks are a new type of public artwork which make use of solar power. They combine art, architecture, design, science, and a common objective: how to make our cities more sustainable. We can find solar artworks around the world, and their designers are generally multidisciplinary groups of specialists. Solar artworks invite us to learn, to feel curiosity, and to be concerned with our planet. These works are the result of an interest in illustrating the need to change the world.
About the Solar Artworks Project
Solar Artworks is a Project for a Doctoral Dissertation involving field and theoretical research elements. Since the beginning of this project in 2009, I have been making contact with solar artworks designers from different countries around the world. As the result of these contacts, I have been collecting visual and written information, and some unpublished documents like interviews or private conversations.
This research also involves significant reflection about the reasons why solar artworks are an interesting alternative as projects for public spaces. To arrive at these conclusions, concepts like public art, sustainability and sustainable art have to be included within the whole reflection.
The main objective of the Solar Artworks Project is to contribute a source of complete and useful information about this new kind of work. In the next stage of the project, I will come up with personal proposals for different real spaces. The objective of these proposals will be to synthesize the ideas that I obtain during the research.
The Solar Artworks Project has a website on which you can find information about the most interesting solar artworks studied in the research process. There are pictures, videos and links to the websites of the solar artworks designers. The site www.solarartworks.com could be considered as a meeting point for people who are interested in this topic. The newer information about the project is continually updated at the solar artworks blog. In this space, the viewer can easily find relevant information related to solar artworks. The blog is a perfect tool for sharing experiences, and for discussing the topic. The Solar Artworks Project is also on social networks such as Twitter and Facebook. This allows us to keep in permanent touch with solar artworks designers as well as keep them informed about the latest news.
